Read full description of the books:

Simon Stockdale tells his son Jack: “Your grandfather is proposing to leave your grandmother to whom he has been married for forty years and marry a woman with whom he has been having an affair for seven years.”

What happens when the esteemed head of a family—a judge no less—announces he is leaving a decades-old marriage to marry his mistress? How do his grown sons feel? How do his grandchildren react? And what if that mistress is hardly classic “mistress material” but—to his family’s dismay—an immensely likable woman? A woman who is, as one son puts it, “the real thing”?

Marrying the Mistress is quintessential Trollope with a new perspective: that of the men in the family. Here are grown sons like Simon, who feels torn between his parents, yet who could imagine being tempted by his father’s new bride; Guy, his father, who struggles to be fair to his children while longing for a new life; and grandchildren like Jack, a teenager in the throes of his first love affair, whose insights ring clearer than his parents’. And then there are the women in their lives: a mother, Laura, who insists on clinging to primacy in her sons’ affections; Simon’s wife, Carrie, who doesn’t want her husband to end up paying the filial debts incurred by his own father; and Merrion, spirited, intelligent and accomplished, who never imagined herself as anybody’s mistress, and who is young enough to believe that she need not choose between love and marriage…

Joanna Trollope, whose elegant, gently provocative novels are becoming as beloved in America as in England, once again “captures the poignant rituals of family attachment and detachment with delicious wryness and large doses of empathy” (Good Housekeeping). In Marrying the Mistress, she braves another emotional minefield with breathtaking agility. Here, Trollope combines her trademark sensitivity with a new boldness and an unsentimental honesty that make this book her most true to life ever.
